Remarks The long awaited Spirit Of '69 7" box set from Trojan, put together by the late Michael de Koningh and subjected to a torturous drawn out genesis since its inception in 2015. So here it is at last, bedecked with photos of vintage skinheads, record labels and clippings, and stuffed with eight 180g slabs of vinyl including straight classics such as Lloyd Robinson's Cuss Cuss, John Holt's Ali Baba and I'm Your Man, Tyrone Evans If This World Were Mine, but also featuring rare gems such as Derrick Harriott's adaptation of the Pastels doo wop oldie - even then - Been So Long, Vin Gordon's bonkers instrumental cut to The Melodians classic Everybody Bawling, and the Hippy Boys funky version of Monk Higgins' Who Done It as the then topical Apollo 11. Some may bridle at the "Boss / Skinhead Reggae" appellation, but its a handy handle to use for the particular strand of reggae music collated here, particularly as many of the records that fall under this banner were pretty much created for the UK's skinhead market. Though conversely we would argue that records like Cuss Cuss or the John Holt titles would have existed anyway.
